Kevin Torell and Andrew White Presented at CalCIMA 2013 Conference

Kevin Torell, AICP and Andrew White, Esq., recently presented at the California Construction and Industrial Materials Association (CalCIMA) 2013 Education Conference in Napa, California on November 12. Their presentation focused on using visual simulations and 3-D technology to improve project understanding and foster approvals. Planning and permitting documents commonly use text and two-dimensional contour maps to explain a mining project, which are not easily understood by the layperson. Not understanding a project can lead to fear and project opposition. Public concerns regarding aesthetic impacts, especially from neighbors of the mining operations, have climbed to the top of the list of environmental concerns along with traffic, noise, and air. However, recent advancements in technology have provided efficient and cost-effective ways to more clearly demonstrate the complicated technical concepts behind mining and reclamation plans. Visual simulations, videos, and multimedia presentations can be used to communicate how a mine is started, how it progresses, and how it is reclaimed. This technology can also be used to compare the result of a variety of reclamation treatments methods and/or visual impact mitigation requirements on the same site in order to select the most effective option for reducing visual impacts.
